|
Sunday, 02 May 2010 |
|
There are a lot of applications out here, like different languages, compilers, and utilities, but for everyday XCode development I found these to be very handy. |

This is so easy, but you need a couple of free open source tools to get the job done. Get a copy of Handbrake and VideoLan (VLC Player) both 32bit. After installing these tools the only other tool you need is included with OS X 10.5+ and is called iDVD. Insert you DVD and open Handbrake. On the menu bar toggle the Presets. I usually choose the Regular, High Profile and rip to the Movies folder as iDVD looks there. Once your movie is done ripping open iDVD and select your movie, I keep the defaults - wide screen Revolution theme. Once the movie is in iDVD all you need to do is make the new DVD using a standard 4gb DVD after tweaking the final video size. Open Project Info in the Project menu. Here you can select a Single Layer DVD @ 4.2g and Professional quality, or if you have a Dual Layer Burner, the 8g DL DVD. If you're in the US you should choose NTSC for Video Mode also, otherwise PAL. Hit the Burn Project To DVD button and give it a hour or two. You new DVD should play on most modern DVD players. |

I've been lazy considering the large amount of open source software resources, but I decided to update the OS X section. I also updated the sites and games sections. Have fun... |

Moved to Macintosh full time. |
|

After years of running Linux and occasionally Windows I've made the switch to Macintosh. My wife has been using Macs for years and I have used them every now and then so it wasn't a big change, plus I supported them years back in a technician role, but I do believe I was missing out. My only complaint is the window management is lacking, and the fact that you can't do a lot of theming. Besides that, I'm in heaven. |

Secret Diary iPhone app restore script |
|
Sunday, 21 February 2010 |
|
If you use the iPhone application Secret Diary I wrote a little Python script to pull the contents from the backup file. Sorry, no GUI, but this script is very straight forward. You need Python 2.5, which should include SQLite3.
1. Save the backup attachment sent from your iPhone Secret Diary app, which should have an .sqlite file extension.
2. Extract the script and open a terminal, or cmd in Windows, and give it the full path and filename. If you saved in c:/secret/SD-Restore Some Date Time.sqlite this is the path you will need to give the script...
When complete you should have a restore folder where the Python script is located with all your entries and images.
