Recording what you hear through your sound card is trivial in Kubuntu using ALSA. This will work for Ubuntu in Gnome also. You do not need any fancy software, magical configurations, or archaic terminal commands. All you need is KRecord and a wav editor like Audacity, Rezound, or a audio file converter like soundKonverter with mp3 or ogg support. You can record through Audacity and Rezound also, but they have given me trouble from time to time.
Install and open KRecord and select Input Level from the menu bar, tick linear. If the level moves when you play sound you are ready to record. If not you will need to open Kmix and un-mute, turn on, or up the volume for Line under Input, also tick capture. Once the levels in KRecord register sound hit record. Once you're finished recording to the buffer simply save it as a wav and open in Audacity. There you can trim the beginning and end of the track to remove dead space, normalize volume, etc. Export as mp3, Flac, or Ogg.
Be aware, recording some audio may break copyright law and I am in no way advocating the piracy of copyrighted material. I actually own the album I show in the screenshot.
