So the OpenMoko based phone, the Neo Freerunner , is just around the corner and this is something I have been watching. I was really hoping I'd be moving to the Neo, but I just don't see much benefit. I hate to say that because I love the openess of the Neo, but I really love my first gen iPhone and the iPhone 3G seems the logical move for me.
Price really was a big factor for me. The Neo Freerunner is set to sell for around $399.00 not including the price for a microSD storage card(s). I currently have an 8gb iPhone, which has been plenty of space for me, this holds my music + video/podcasts and I have a lot of software installed as well so the $199.00 iPhone 3G is looking really good to me. Also, I use the camera often and I am not seeing a camera on the Neo.The Neo is also bit heavier with less screen dimension plus a bigger form factor. Honestly, I also fear the Neo will not be as fluid, as clean, or as stable as the iPhone. One nice reality about the Neo is that I can I mod the case, or perhaps buy one retail at some point, as well as replace the battery. I haven't had any problems with the iPhone battery or it's life, but I know some people have an issue with that. Anyway... Here are some stats I looked at: | | iPhone | Neo Freerunner | | Dim | 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches | 4.75 x 2.44 x 0.73 inches | Weight

Everything else is about equal, GSM ((850/900)/1800, 1900 MHz), WiFi (802.11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, etc... I will continue to watch OpenMoko and the Fic smartphones in hopes one day I can be totally free, but for now I will wait. |
