Some free tools I use along side the included OS X utilities to keep  my wife's Mac in tip top shape. I hope these are useful for you also.

OnyX

It allows you to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Exposé, Safari, Login window and of some of Apple's own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, to see the detailed info of your configuration, to preview various logs and CrashReporter-reports, to check the Preferences files and more.

Automatically check update, verify the status of startup disk and the structure of system files at launch, parameter with precision the actions, modify the appearance of OnyX (Brushed Metal, Flat Metal or Aqua), increase the window transparency, choose its icon and the toolbar icons among those proposed in the Preferences...

IceClean

IceClean is a powerful System Maintenance and Optimization Tool using only UNIX built-in System Tasks to help your Mac stay healthy and to keep it running smoothly.

AppleJack

AppleJack is a user friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X. With AppleJack you can troubleshoot a computer even if you can't load the GUI, or don't have a startup CD handy. AppleJack runs in Single User Mode and is menu-based for ease of use.

TinkerTool

TinkerTool System is a professional all-in-one maintenance tool for the Macintosh platform. It allows you to change advanced operating system settings and offers a wide variety of maintenance features. The latest version comes with a new de-installation helper for applications or other software components which had been installed by "drag and drop", a tool to eliminate unneeded code support in Universal Applications, and a feature to manipulate the Services menu of Mac OS X.

AppCleaner

AppCleaner is a small application which allows you to thoroughly uninstall unwanted apps. Installing an application distributes many files throughout your System using space of your Hard Drive unnecessarily. AppCleaner finds all these small files and safely deletes them.

Maintenance

It allows you to run misc tasks of system maintenance: repair permissions, run periodic scripts, reset Spotlight's Index, rebuild the LaunchServices database, delete Application, Font and System cache, check the status of the Hard disk...

Cache Out X

Cache Out X removes virtual memory swap files, system and user cache files, purges system logs, and deletes web browser cookie files. Be aware that the latest version for 10.4+ is Beta so be careful.

Disk Inventory X

Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X 10.3 (and later). It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps". If you've ever wondered where all your disk space has gone, Disk Inventory X will help you to answer this question.

Preferential Treatment

“Preferential Treatment” is basically a GUI wrapped around the “plutil” command line tool provided by Apple, Inc. since Mac OS X 10.2 (see “man plutil” in the Terminal). “plutil” just checks to see if .plist files are valid XML. This application is no panacea but it does help to fix blatantly corrupt preference files.

Secrets

A database of hidden settings for Mac OS X. This App is in Beta so please be careful.
