Plane Shift is an open source, as in free beer, online RPG (MMORPG). It looks really good so I figured I'd give it a try.
update: Finally got a server and got into the game. After trying for a long time to speak to people to get through the tutorial I get stuck at one npc teacher. I simply typed everything I already figured out and she just stands there telling me she doesn't understand. I don't want to spend time searching forums for help for the tutorial! If you have more patience give it a try, but it just annoyed me. By the way, if you are stuck on the first npc I think I simply said hello to get things started.
Downloaded the large 400+ mb file, Windows client version 4.02, created my account via the site, and fired up the updater just for the heck of it. No updates. Next I fired up the client so I could play the game, but crash! I receive a error that the game is missing OpenAL32.dll, which can be found here . After reading a bunch of crap, which was overly complicated for what was needed to be done, I found that all that needs to be done is to put the dll in \System32. The OpenAL32.dll installer does this for you by the way. Also, ignore all reference to the Plane Shift XML for this latest version. So now I can play and actually evaluate the game. Nope, server failed. I go to the Plane Shift site, which says if there are player counts greater than zero the server is up and it lists 182 people playing happily. So now I read the typical bullshit about routers and firewalls. What the hell, I have nothing to lose. I set an exception in my Windows firewall for port 7777 UDP. Server still fails... Go into my router and set 7777 UDP explicitly open for my machine there. I even set them both to UDP/TCP and nothing, the server fails. After two days of waiting thinking maybe the server is nutty I finally give up. Considering I do many things on this machine, including netowrk gaming and have forwarded ports and such with no problems I simply have no options left, it simply does not work. I tried this on my Windows XP SP3 machine so I plan to try the game on my Vista machine, Madriva 2009, and my wife's Mac running OS X 10.5 just to give them a chance, but the problems I have encounter leave me disappointed. Maybe youwill have better luck?
