If you have never heard of Blender 3D you may want to consider it if you're looking to create 3-D content at a reasonable price, FREE! It has the power of Maya and the likes, packed full of physics, hair, cloth, and Z-Brush like sculpting features. If you are not convinced that a free open source product can equal that of the high cost industry tools, than let the content prove it. As for the proof, the latest in these open projects to show off the power of Blender 3D and open tools is a new 3-D game based off the open Blender movie "Big Buck Bunny" also created using Blender.

The first movie to show off Blender's power was called "Elephants Dream", you can watch it here. The second movie is named "Big Buck Bunny" and can be watched here. What's cool about these movies other than the fact that they were created using open source tools, including Ubuntu Linux as the OS, is the fact that these movies are released under Creative Commons and all parts can be used by others to learn and gain new ideas and skills from, but what if you are more interesting in creating video games? Well never fear, Yo Frankie is here!

Yo Frankie! is build in Blender 3D and uses the Crystal Space 3D game engine as well as my favorite language Python to glue things together. Python itself has interesting game power, check it out here. Like the movies Yo Frankie! is covered by the Creative Commons license and all the source files are available to download and explore. This idea of openess allows creative growth and innovative ideas to blossom, plus you get a cool game for free.

Download Yo Frankie!, source files,  and levels!

How about the game? The graphics look pretty good. I had to set the shader to off and lower the resolution in Options to medium with my laptop's crappy video card, which displayed poorly until I did so. The game on medium res with no shader looked pretty good and the response time is good on the controls. The only issue was load time, when I first fired the game up it took it a bit to load, I think this is Python compiling on first load as the second time I fired the game up things loaded pretty quick. This maybe faster on Linux or OS X, maybe not. When you first load the game walk up to one of the signs to actually enter a level and have fun.
