XML Flash gauge and meter PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 February 2007

Update: These have been GPL'ed and can be downloaded here .  They are no longer XML based. I have the original XML based gauge and meter here with source. These can be used on a server or stand alone.

I am currently learning Flash so I can build a Web Dashboard at work. I looked on the internet for examples of how to make a gauge and meter type object to no avail. That annoyed me so here, have two I made for free.

These are the very first Flash things I have ever made so please be kind. The source code is available upon request, and yes that is sloppy too. Use the contact form to request it. I plan to make these better as I get more skilled at working in Flash and know ActionScript a little better. I will also be creating similar things in OpenLazlo, which I will make available here as well. Currently I have no license I will consider these, no strings and do as you please. If they get to be really cool I will mostly go with an open license.

Here are images so you can preview them. Currently I have the background set to transparent in the html, but I found this does not work in Linux. Since at work they use I.E. and Windows this works fine - pain in the ass I swear. I will be adding the ability to add the background via XML into the Flash object itself later.

  The Gauge

  The Meter

Current features, data is supplied via a small XML file, works on or off the server. You point to your XML file in the Flash object/embed code in html. Flash is updated on the fly as the XML gets updated, no need to refresh the browser. Title and title color are also set via the XML. Examples provided in the zip, just extract it and open the html file the gauge and change the value in the XML file or embed into html.  To make these not cause caching issues it use cache manager , see in the flash code, appends random number to each read of the XML.

If you want to download the original XML for the hell of it they are here , but they suck worse than the new ones.

 Enjoy
