Maxemum TV-Guide (MTVG) is a desktop TV-Guide that uses xml-files with tv-listings generated by the binaries from the XMLTV-project. I have setup ad used this application on Kunbutu Breezy, Dapper, and Edgy. Maxemum TV-Guide is here XMLTV-project is here I am not a big T.V. fan, but it makes it nice to look up my favorite genre or channels without all the other crap getting in the way.
Update April 4th, 2007 - Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty: FreeGuide is available in the latest repositories, which allows for easy installation using "Add Remove Software, if you want an easy alternative to Maxemum. Also, FreeGuide has a setup wizard that does everything below without the setup, even sets up xmltv and helps you create an account on Zap2it. I think Maxemum has a nicer interface. Install packages, Adept or apt-get... xmltv xmltv-utils xmltv-gui libxmltv-perl
Install Maxemum TV-Guide (download the deb package and install via dpkg -i) If you have depend problems just find them in Adept and or get the depends with apt-get.
Create a account at Zap2it ENTER THIS CONFIRMATION CODE: ZYZM-TE5O-SBUT
Log in at Zap2it and select your cable provider and your channels you wish to view in Maxemum TV-Guide.
Once your account is setup run this at the command prompt following the instructions as you go, this is for USA.
$ tv_grab_na_dd --configure
I'm in Ohio, eastern time zone, so I enter -400 when asked. If you are unsure about your timezone look it up here :
Go to your home directory and in ./xmltv (if it does not exist create it) create a directory named max and create a blank text file there; home/your_user_name/.xmltv/max/ name it "mtvg.xml"
Start mtvg from the menu, or the command prompt $ maxemumtvguide
In Preferences -> Updates add the location to the file: /home/your_user_name/.xmltv/max/mtvg.xml
then enter the update command, this is what I have set: tv_grab_na_dd --days 7 --offset -2 --output /home/your_user_name/.xmltv/max/mtvg.xml
Now hit the update button and start using your TV Guide!

I love Maxemum TV guide, but it is very slow when it updates. Zap2It can be a pain also. You must renew your subscription every few months, which requires rerunning the config command. If your hardcore and want PVR, TV Guide, and tons of other cool stuff get MythTV |
