You want a good Office replacement? Try OnlyOffice Desktop.

I’ve been an Open Office user for many years and it has been a good run. When Open Office forked I switched to LibreOffice. They are both great but there are always bugs. I have also used WPS and Caligre. Then there are those times where I dump them all for Abiword and Gnumeric. I love Gnumeric! Still I sometimes want a clean, easy to use, and no nonsense office product, because I don’t do a lot of Office crap at home.

Enter in Google Docs and Sheets and the other on-line Office products. Ok, I guess. My problem, I am old school! I like installing something and using it when I need it. I’m not worried about privacy – like that exists these days – just want an app that’s not in the browser. Then comes OnlyOffice Desktop. I found my office product!

It’s stable, it’s private, it’s easy to use, it doesn’t have weird bugs you find when you’re in the middle of something. Not only that, it reads and writes Open Office and MS Office formats. It can also be used like Google products in an on-line setting. I love it and you might too.

You can get it as a snap or deb at https://www.onlyoffice.com/download-desktop.aspx

The deb did not work for me since I am running 19.10 so I installed the Snap.

If you need Snap to install and run simply run:

sudo apt install snapd

Once you have snap you can install easily from here or with:

sudo snap install onlyoffice-desktopeditors

You are not done yet. To allow the Snap to access all your file systems run this command:

sudo snap connect onlyoffice-desktopeditors:removable-media

That’s it. If you find it doesn’t work for you you can simply uninstall with:

sudo apt remove onlyoffice* or sudo snap remove onlyoffice-desktopeditors if you installed the snap.
